The Family is one of the most celebrated projects to emerge from Prince’s legendary Paisley Park era. Originally released in 1985 on Warner Bros. Records, the band’s lone album became an instant cult classic—featuring the Top 10 R&B hit “Screams of Passion” and the original recording of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” later made world-famous by Sinéad O’Connor.
Produced and written by Prince, The Family blended orchestral soul, psychedelic funk, and Minneapolis groove into a sound that has remained influential for decades. Although the original group performed only once—at a sold-out show at Minneapolis’ historic First Avenue—the album built a passionate global following that never faded.
In 2011, members of the band reunited under the name fDeluxe, finally delivering the long-awaited follow-up that fans had hoped for. Since then, the group has continued to celebrate the music and legacy of The Family with performances around the world, including a European tour with Candy Dulfer and an appearance at Paisley Park’s Celebration in 2025.
Today, the music of The Family / fDeluxe stands as a powerful chapter in the Minneapolis Sound story—bringing together the musicians who helped create one of Prince’s most beloved and enduring recordings.
Rest in Peace, Jellybean Johnson
